Chilly Week Ahead: Highs Near 60, First Frost Talk for Outlying Areas (Baltimore Charm City News)

Baltimore settles into a properly chilly stretch this week. Tuesday tops out near 61 degrees with an overnight low around 42, Wednesday reaches about 59 with a low near 41, and Thursday is the coolest of the three, with a high near 56 and a low around 40 under late-fall skies.

Those numbers put the city itself on the edge of frost season rather than in the middle of it. Outlying and low-lying areas of Baltimore County and beyond — places that radiate heat away fastest on calm, clear nights — are where the first frost talk belongs this week, especially away from the harbor's moderating water.

Tender plants are the first decision. Gardeners with late tomatoes, peppers, or outdoor potted plants should plan to cover or bring them in on the coldest nights, and anyone who has not yet drained outdoor hoses or protected exposed pipes should put it on this week's list rather than next month's.

The practical wardrobe shift has arrived, too. Mornings now start in the low 40s, school bus stops and Light RailLink platforms feel colder than the afternoon high suggests, and the daily swing of roughly 20 degrees between dawn and midday makes layers the only sensible strategy through Thursday.

There is an upside to the pattern: dry, cool, and bright is ideal walking weather for the Inner Harbor, Fort McHenry, and the city's neighborhood streets. Expect the chill to feel sharpest at sunrise, ease by late morning, and return quickly once the early November sun drops in the late afternoon.
