Fells Point to Hampden: A Fall Walk Through Two Baltimore Originals

Cobblestones on the water and a main street uptown — Fells Point and Hampden bookend the Baltimore neighborhood experience, and November flatters them both.

Fells Point to Hampden: A Fall Walk Through Two Baltimore Originals (Baltimore Charm City News)

Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods, and two of them make the perfect fall pairing. Fells Point brings the cobblestones, the water, and the maritime bones of an old port district. Hampden brings The Avenue, the rowhouses, and a main-street energy that belongs entirely to itself uptown.

Start in Fells Point in the morning, when Broadway Square is quiet and the harbor light is on the brick. The neighborhood's streets reward wandering: Thames Street along the water, the market square up Broadway, and side streets where the scale of an 18th-century port town survives inside a modern restaurant district.

Hampden runs on a different clock. West 36th Street — The Avenue — fills through the afternoon with shoppers, cafe tables, and the particular Baltimore theater of a neighborhood that performs its character without apology. Fall is prime season here, before the holiday lights turn the district into a December destination.

The two neighborhoods connect through the city's middle: a drive up the Jones Falls valley, or MTA routes through downtown and uptown, with Johns Hopkins' Homewood campus and the Baltimore Museum of Art as worthy stops on the way. Towson and the county suburbs sit just beyond, but this is a city day.

Newcomers ask which neighborhood is the real Baltimore, and the honest answer is that the question is the mistake. The port town and the mill town, the square and The Avenue — Baltimore has always been several cities at once, and a fall Saturday is long enough to visit two of them properly.
